IMMACULATE CONCEPTION PARISH

Hilongos,Leyte

Before the coming of the Spaniards, legend say as that Hilongos was ruled by a powerful rajah whose name was Amahawin. His judrisdiction covered the present day towns of Inopacan,Hindang,Hilongos,Bato,Matalom.

Adecade or so after Legaspi established a colony in Cebu in 1565,the first Jesuit missionaries arrived in Hilongos to sow the seeds of Christianity. In the beginning the natives were hostile to the Spanish evangelizers, but the patience and perseverance of the friars eventually won them over to the faith. An improvised church of light materials was constructed on the site where the present church is located.

In the early 1700's, Padre Leonardo Lelis Diaz ordered construction of a massive stone church. This was done through forced labor by the natives. Adjacent to the church was the adobe convento (rectory) with brick roofing. On the left side of the church near the puerta mayor was constructed an imposing bell tower which still stands today.

Hilongos is proud of her many historic landmarks which show the influence of Spanish colonization: the church, the bell tower, the ruins of the rectory, and the fort itself (kuta) which encloses the church compound.

In 1737 Hilongos was established as a parish, with the Immaculate Concepion as patrones. Ten years later the Jesuits, in order to facilitate the task of evangelization, divided the Island of Leyte into three districts or Residencias: Palo, Carigara and Hilongos - latter because of its strategic location and its well developed facilities. Under the ecclesiaatical jurisdiction of the Hilongos residencia were the pueblos of palompon, Poro (Camotes), Ormog (Ormoc), Baybay, Maasin, Sogor (Sogod), Liloan, Cabalian and Hinunanagan.

Historical records show that in 1754, more than 2000 Moslem Milanaus and Ilanaus laid siege to hilongos for eleven days. But the people withstood the siege, hiding inside the church compound which was surrounded by massive stones walls. From the well- protected Kuta, the natives were able to take potshots at the Moslem invaders using poison arrows an improvised missiles. Eventually, sensing that they could not storm the Kuta even with their superior fighting prowess, the Moslems retreated and left the whole publacion in peace.

In 1900, a certain Capitan Francisco "Kikoy" Flordeliz, a local Katipunero Leader, refused to surrender to the Americans and, instead, resisted violently against the invaders. This caught the ire of the Ameircans, Who razed the entire town, including the church and the convento. The Stone church and convento was never to be restored its original form again.

The present parish church underwent a number of repairs and renovations. The structures as it stands today was blessed and re-dedicated by the Most Rev. Vicente T. Ataviado, DD, in 1968.

Among the many bell towers built during the Spanish regime, done of the tallest and most beautiful belongs to Hilongos church. Even from afar,it looks massive and majestic. In the past, it had a dual purpose:to summon the Hilongosnons to prayer and worship, aand as a watchtower for invaders.

Today, there are existing forts,or kuta,in key cities and towns throughout the Philippine Islands. Although not as imposing as the others, the fort in Hilongos enclosing the church compound can be counted as one of them. The other extant-and more popular-forts are Fort Santiago in Manila, Forty San Pedro in Cebu City, Fort Nuestra Sra del Pilar in Zamboanga City, and Fort Santiago(with the icon of the Immaculate Conception of Triumph) in Illigan City.

Indeed, Hilongos town-with its histirical landmarks-ias a legacy of zeal of the first missionaries and the faith of the people. Today, it stands invitingly to all, a living proof that faith can transcend time and human frailties.
